The Governments of Kenya and Somalia have resolved to re-open the border between them in a phased-out manner within the next ninety (90) days effective today 15th May 2023.
The Mandera-Bulahawa border point, Mandera County will be reopened within thirty (30) days followed by reopening of the Liboi-Harhar/Double border point, Garissa county within 60 days.
Ninety (90) days from today, point Daresalam in Kiunga-Ras Kamboni borde, Lamu County will be reopened. A fourth border point from Wajir county will be considered for opening at a later date.
Kenya and Somalia will continously engage to enhance cross-border experiences, activities and engagements, keeping in mind the emerging security trends and dynamics that transcend national, regional and continental boundaries.
A high level Ministerial meeting at Harambee house, attended by Cabinet Secretary for Defence Aden Duale, Somalia’s Minister for Internal Security Mohamed Ahmed Sheikh Ali, Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur the Minister for Defence and foreign affairs, Minister Abshir Omar Jama appreciated the security challenges posed by cross-border crime and threats, including violent extremism, organized crime, irregular migration and transnational terrorism.
The two governments agreed to strengthen cross-border communication and information sharing, develop modalities of addressing cross-border challenges and enhance border infrastructure, management and capacity.
